La Dirindina

 


Her lesson with the maestro is interrupted by Liscione, a famous castrato. He is well placed to help Dirindina climb to stardom and knows that her talent and beauty can be put to profitable use. He brings the news that she has been offered the position of Prima Donna at the Milan opera house. The relationship between the two singers enrages Don Pelagio whose jealousy prompts him to see a romance which is not only scandalous

He can't get the high notes despite the operation

but will result in the loss of his beloved and lucrative pupil:

Liscione: I have just had a letter! The theatre in Milan - they want to know if you'll agree to sing there when they stage 'Coriolanus'
Carissimo (to Dirindina):La, sol,fa, mi, fa, mi - I wish you'd pay attention.
Dirindina: And is is paid well?
Liscione: Six hundred crisp bank notes!



Carissimo:
I can't believe my hearing - these notes need your attention.
