Sempronio doesn't immediately notice the competition on his doorstep, so fascinated is he by the newspapers. He has no time for drugs or dispensing, instead of medicine, all he studies is the newspapers! He reads everything and believes it all; in fact he is so preoccupied with a story about a potential war between India and China that he almost misses the fact that Mengone and Grilletta are making love under his nose.
